Lithium Battery for Seafood Processing Plant

Lithium Battery for Seafood Processing Plant

A seafood plant has almost no tolerance for a power interruption. Chilled seawater tanks, blast freezers, flake-ice machines and wash-down pumps all sit on a critical panel, and a two-hour outage during a landing can destroy a day’s catch and the cold-chain record that goes with it. That is why plant engineers now treat storage as process equipment rather than as an emergency extra, and why a lithium battery manufacturer is usually the first call when a facility near the end of a weak rural feeder starts losing product to voltage dips.

Where the Energy Actually Goes

Most of a processing plant’s load is refrigeration, and refrigeration is lumpy. Screw compressors start and stop against suction pressure, blast freezers pull hard for twenty minutes then coast, and ice machines cycle on a timer that has nothing to do with the rest of the building. Add the seasonal spike when a fleet lands at once and you get a demand profile with tall, narrow peaks that are expensive to serve from the grid and punishing for a generator that is sized for the average.

Why Dips Matter More Than Outages

Full outages are rare and obvious. The quieter cost is the momentary dip that drops contactors on a compressor rack or resets a PLC mid-cycle. Product may not warm enough to fail, but the batch record is broken, the line stops for a manual restart, and the HACCP log needs an entry nobody wants to write. A battery-backed critical panel rides through those events without the equipment ever seeing the disturbance.

Chemistry and Layout in a Wash-Down Environment

Lithium iron phosphate is the sensible default inside a food facility. It does not gas under normal operation, it tolerates being held at full charge between seasons, and its thermal behaviour simplifies placement in a plant room rather than a separate bunker. Keep the cabinet out of the high-pressure wash-down zone, specify a stainless or coated enclosure with a rated gasket, and remember that salt-laden coastal air is hard on untreated steel fixings.

Attribute LiFePO4 lithium Diesel genset Lead-acid
Ride-through on dips Instant 10–30 s start Instant
Indoor food-area placement Yes No Vented room only
Routine upkeep None Fuel, oil, exercise Watering
Holds charge off-season Yes Fuel degrades Sulphation risk
Service life 10–15 yr 20+ yr (high upkeep) 3–5 yr

Sizing From the Landing Schedule

Size the inverter on compressor surge, not on the connected total. A rack that averages 40 kW may ask for 120 kW for three seconds when three compressors restart together after a dip, so specify three-second surge headroom with margin above that figure. Size the battery on the energy needed to hold the cold store through the worst realistic event — four hours covers most coastal feeders, eight hours if the site is at the end of a line with a history of storm damage.

Keeping the Cold-Chain Record Intact

Storage earns its keep twice here: it keeps the product in specification, and it keeps the documentation continuous. Put the data logger, the network switch and the temperature probes on the backed-up circuit alongside the compressors, so the record survives the same event the refrigeration does. Ask for BMS and logger data on the same time base, because an auditor will eventually want to see that the two agree.

Humidity, Salt and Corrosion Control

Coastal plants combine 90% humidity with airborne chloride. Specify conformal-coated boards, stainless cable glands and a filtered, positive-pressure enclosure rather than open ventilation. Where the battery room shares air with the processing hall, a dehumidifier on the same backed-up circuit costs little and extends the life of every electronic assembly in the cabinet.

What to Ask a Supplier

Confirm the three-second surge rating at your summer ambient, the guaranteed autonomy at end-of-life capacity rather than nameplate, the enclosure corrosion specification for a coastal site, and who warrants the cells versus the power electronics. A supplier who puts all four in writing before the order is worth more than a cheaper quote that goes quiet on the third question.

People Also Ask

How much storage does a mid-size seafood plant need? Most plants running two compressor racks and a flake-ice machine land between 100 kWh and 250 kWh, which typically covers four hours of critical load.

Can the battery run the blast freezer? Yes, provided the inverter surge rating covers the compressor restart; blast freezers are usually the single largest surge on the site.

Is lithium safe near food processing areas? LiFePO4 with a certified BMS does not vent gas in normal operation and is routinely installed indoors; place it outside the wash-down zone in a coated enclosure.

Will it help with demand charges? Substantially. Shaving the compressor restart peaks is often where half the financial case comes from, before any outage benefit is counted.
