Waterproofing Is Still the Hard Part
Better chemistry does not remove the need for a properly engineered enclosure. Specify IP68 with a pressure-equalising vent, marine-grade connectors rated for mated immersion, and a conformal-coated BMS board. Salt water is conductive and relentlessly finds the smallest gasket flaw, so pressure-test every pack before shipping rather than relying on a design rating. Include a moisture sensor inside the box that trips the main contactor and logs the event — that single feature prevents most catastrophic failures.
Thermal Management in a Sealed Box
A sealed pack cannot exchange air, so heat leaves through the case walls into the surrounding water — which is actually a favourable environment. Use an aluminium enclosure with internal thermal pads bonding the cell block to the case, and let the sea do the cooling. Semi solid state cells tolerate a slightly wider operating window than liquid cells, but keep the design target below 45 °C at the hottest cell during sustained cruising.
Charging and Travel Rules
Fast charging an efoil pack at 2C shortens session turnaround to about 40 minutes but accelerates ageing; 1C is the sensible default for rental fleets that value pack life over throughput. For air travel, note that any pack above 160 Wh requires cargo shipping under dangerous-goods rules regardless of chemistry, so plan logistics around ground freight or destination rentals.
Fleet and Rental Considerations
Rental operators should log cycle count and peak temperature per pack, then retire units at 80% of original capacity rather than waiting for a customer to run out of charge offshore. Standardise on one pack format across the fleet so a swap takes two minutes, and keep 20% spare packs in rotation during peak season.
