Designing a home energy storage system around those limits is mostly a question of being realistic about the load: you probably need a smaller battery than a detached-house calculator suggests, in a quieter box, in a tighter spot. Why a Townhouse Is Not a Detached House
Everything about a home energy storage system gets easier when you have a garage wall and a side yard. A townhouse usually offers neither. The meter board is often inside, the switchboard is small, there is no spare wall long enough for a wall-mounted unit, and any external equipment has to be acceptable to the neighbours whose wall it sits near. None of that is fatal. It does mean the equipment choice is driven by footprint and noise before it is driven by price per kilowatt-hour.
What You Actually Want to Back Up
Be honest about the load. A townhouse rarely needs whole-home backup: the air conditioning load that dominates a suburban backup calculation is usually smaller here because the shared walls do some of the thermal work. Most owners end up protecting a short list: refrigeration, the internet router and any home office gear, lighting on two or three circuits, the garage or front door, and medical equipment if anyone in the house depends on it. That list typically sits between 1 and 2.5 kW continuous, which is a very different battery from a whole-home system.

Sizing for a Townhouse Load Profile
Start from the evening peak rather than the daily total. A townhouse that uses 12 kWh a day might only need 6 kWh of usable battery, because the goal is to cover the 6 pm to 11 pm window when solar has stopped and tariffs are highest. Check the usable figure, not the nameplate. A 10 kWh battery with 90 % usable depth of discharge gives you 9 kWh; a cheaper unit limited to 80 % gives you 8. That difference is worth more than most feature lists.
Where the Unit Goes
Internal garage walls are the usual answer, but check the fire separation rating first: a wall shared with the neighbouring dwelling may be a fire-rated boundary that you cannot penetrate for cable runs. External walls facing a courtyard are often easier and safer. Noise is the other constraint. Inverters with a fan will be audible in a small courtyard at night. Look for a fanless or naturally cooled unit under about 5 kW, and check the measured dB figure at one metre rather than trusting a ‘quiet operation’ claim.
Rules, Meters and Feed-In
Strata or body-corporate approval comes before the electrical work, not after. Most schemes will ask for the equipment datasheet, the installer’s licence, and confirmation that nothing mounts on common property. Budget two to six weeks for that approval. On the utility side, confirm whether your meter supports a consumption monitor and whether the local feed-in tariff rules let you export from the battery during peak windows. Some regions restrict battery export, which changes the payback arithmetic.
What to Ask a Supplier
Ask for usable capacity in writing, the warranty’s end-of-life capacity guarantee, and a commissioning date. Then ask the question that separates good installers from the rest: what happens to the backup circuits if the grid fails while you are exporting? The answer should mention an automatic transfer switch and a tested changeover time.
