Lithium Battery for Cold Storage Warehouse Forklifts and Backup
Lithium Battery for Cold Storage Warehouse Forklifts and Backup
Freezer warehouses run at −20 °C to −30 °C, an environment that halves lead-acid runtime and drags out charging. Operators are switching to self-heating lithium packs that keep forklifts, pallet trucks, and backup controllers working through every shift. A capable lithium battery manufacturer engineers the internal heater, insulation, and BMS logic that let a pack charge and discharge safely below freezing.

Why Cold Destroys Conventional Batteries
At −20 °C a flooded lead-acid battery delivers barely 60% of its rated capacity, and charging it cold accelerates sulfation. Standard lithium cells cannot be charged below 0 °C without plating lithium metal on the anode, which permanently cuts life and raises safety risk. Cold storage therefore needs a purpose-built low-temperature design, not a repurposed ambient pack.
How Low-Temperature Lithium Solves It
Freezer-rated LiFePO4 packs embed film heaters that draw from the pack or charger to warm cells above 5 °C before charge current flows. Discharge is permitted to −30 °C because lithium delivers strong cold power output even when charging is gated. Combined with sealed IP65 enclosures and condensation management, this keeps freezer forklifts on a single opportunity-charge routine instead of battery swaps.

Specifying a Freezer Pack
Define the coldest continuous temperature, the required autonomy, and whether charging happens inside or outside the freezer. Specify heater wattage sized to warm the pack within 15–20 minutes, IP65 sealing with anti-condensation venting, and a BMS that logs low-temperature events for warranty. A manufacturer with cold-chain references can supply matched chargers and CAN/RS485 telemetry for the fleet system.
People Also Ask
Can any lithium battery work in a freezer? No. Only packs with integrated heating and a low-temperature BMS should be charged below 0 °C; charging a standard cell cold causes lithium plating and early failure.
How much runtime is gained over lead-acid? Freezer forklifts typically see 30–50% more usable runtime per charge because lithium holds voltage under cold, high-current draw.
