Why a Finishing Line Cannot Ride Through a Dip

Anodizing is electrochemical, and the quality of the oxide layer depends on current density, bath temperature, and dwell time being held inside a narrow band. A voltage sag does not need to be long to ruin a batch. If circulation stops, the bath stratifies and the work nearest the heating element runs hot. If the hoist stops between tanks, the parts sit dripping and the film stains where the solution dries. A short interruption at the wrong moment scraps the whole rack, and rework is expensive because the existing film has to be stripped before the aluminium can be run again.

Deciding What Actually Has to Stay Energised

The rectifier is the largest load on the line, but it is rarely the load worth backing up. Bulk process current for a working tank runs to thousands of amps, and covering that would demand a bank sized for minutes of very heavy draw at a cost few shops can justify. What matters during a disturbance is everything around the rectifier: tank agitation and circulation pumps, chiller pumps, extraction and scrubber fans, the hoist drive, and the control system that sequences the line. Those loads are modest, they are what protect work already in progress, and they are what let the line restart cleanly instead of from a cold, stratified bath.

Sizing Against a Load Profile, Not a Nameplate

Start from the auxiliaries rather than the whole-plant figure. Log a week of current on the agitation and chiller circuits and note the starting surge on each motor, because a pump that draws 3 kW running may pull 12 kW for a second when it starts. The bank has to deliver that surge without the inverter folding, and it has to carry the combined running load for whichever window you choose. Most finishing shops settle on 15 to 30 minutes of autonomy, which covers the overwhelming majority of events and gives a standby generator time to start, synchronise, and take the load without a second interruption.

A finishing shop is a hard place to put electronics. Acid mist carries, it settles on anything cool, and the deposits it leaves are conductive. Specify enclosures with a realistic ingress rating for the location, ask for conformal coating on the control boards, and prefer stainless or properly coated fixings over bright zinc-plated steel. Wherever floor space allows, put the bank in a separate, clean, ventilated room rather than over the tanks. Lithium iron phosphate cells tolerate a wider temperature band than most people expect, but keeping them out of the mist and away from the heat of the bath hall is worth more than any specification on the sheet.

What to Ask a Supplier

Ask for the continuous rating and the short-term overload rating separately, because the motor inrush figure is what decides whether the bank works on your line. Request the usable capacity rather than the nameplate figure, and confirm how the system behaves if a pump starts while the bank is already near its limit. Ask what the warranty says about cycling in a standby application, and whether the supplier has commissioned a bank in a wet-process plant before.
